🥧 National Pie Day: Celebrate with a Classic Homemade Apple Pie

Few desserts are as timeless, comforting, and universally loved as pie. And on National Pie Day, we have the perfect excuse to preheat the oven, roll out the dough, and fill our kitchens with the sweet aroma of baked fruit and buttery crust. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or trying pie-making for the first time, today is about savoring a slice of nostalgia.

Pie has long been a symbol of home cooking and celebration. From holiday dessert tables to cozy weekend gatherings, it brings people together with every flaky bite. Apple pie, in particular, remains the all-time classic — sweet, slightly tart, warmly spiced, and wrapped in golden pastry perfection.

So let’s honor National Pie Day with a simple, homemade apple pie recipe that’s approachable, impressive, and absolutely delicious.

🍏 Classic Homemade Apple Pie Recipe

Ingredients

For the Crust:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 6–8 tbsp ice water

For the Filling:

  • 6 cups peeled, sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For Brushing:

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional, for sparkle)

Instructions

  1. Make the crust:
In a bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Add ice water gradually until dough forms. Divide in two, flatten into discs, wrap, and chill for 1 hour.

  2. Prepare the filling:
In a large bowl, toss apple slices with sugars, flour, spices, lemon juice, and vanilla. Let sit for 10 minutes to release juices.

  3. Assemble the pie:
Roll out one dough disc and place in a pie dish. Fill with apple mixture. Roll out second dough and lay over top. Seal edges and cut small slits for steam.

  4. Bake:
Brush with egg wash, sprinkle sugar if desired, and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 50–55 minutes until golden and bubbling.

  5. Cool & serve:
Let cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
